Delhi News Nirbhaya Helpline On Verge Of Closure Staff Not Paid Salaries Since December



One of the major steps which were taken by the Delhi government to ensure safety of the women in the capital was setting up of women helpline. The 181 'Nirbhaya' helpline was started after the gang rape incident of the medical intern student in December 2012.
 
The helpline is on the verge of closure as the contracts of the employees running the service has not been renewed. The employees working for this noble cause are not even paid salaries since December.
 
The 'Nirbhaya' helpline, which runs 24x7, receives nearly 3000 calls from women in problem every day. Khadijah Faruqui, the head of the helpline, has sent an SOS to Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung.
 
An all women team mostly from the poor families run this helpline who have not received salaries from past two months. Many of them are also the survivors of such heinous crimes.
