The mobile messaging startup Whatsapp has been grabbed by the biggest social networking website Facebook yesterday.
The Mark Zuckerberg company has revealed that it has “agreed to acquire WhatsApp and that their entire team will be joining us at Facebook”. According to a news report in Bloomberg the deal comes for as much as $19 billion in cash and stock (That’s about Rs. 1,18,237 crore when translated into Indian currency). Since the deal of Time Warner’s merger with AOL in 2001 that was settled for an amount of $124 billion.
Facebook has announced Whatsapp will continue to operate independently within Facebook. It has said “Over the next few years, we're going to work hard to help WhatsApp grow and connect the whole world. We also expect that WhatsApp will add to our efforts forInternet.org, our partnership to make basic internet services affordable for everyone.”
